MATEO began playing music at the age of 3 years old, when his father (a drum teacher) got him a junior drum set for Christmas. He was then put in the Humber Community Music program at age 4, where he began learning music theory, ear training, and rhythm with other talented children. At age 10, he picked up the piano at the suggestion of Cathy Mitro, the head of the Community program. He was then put in multiple jazz ensembles, where he began to realize his love for improvised music. Today, Mateo has played alongside and studied under multiple Canadian legends on both the drums and piano, such as Kirk McDonald, Lorne Lofsky, Pat Labarbera, and Neil Swainson. In 2017, Mateo won the Ludwig Canadian Drummer of the Year award at Musicfest Canada Nationals. He has also received multiple gold awards at Musicfest as both a drummer and a pianist. Mateo also has also taught both piano and drums, privately and at several music schools, since he was only 16 years old. He attends the Humber College Bachelor of Music program and is in his 2nd year. Mateo continues to pursue his goal of being the best musician he can be, and he hopes to share his love for music with all his students and the world.
